The Citizen Scientists of Southwest Nova submitted a proposal to protect an area of 3900 ha of Crown land surrounding Goldsmith Lake, in order to protect the 123 confirmed occurrences of species at risk. Thirty-one stands of old growth forest are now recognized by DNR within the proposed protected area. Despite the important conservation value of this area, logging permits have been granted for high production forestry (clearcutting and glyphosate spray treatment).
