Hartlen Point
Hartlen Point is situated on the southeast headland of Halifax Harbour. It is an important staging area for migratory birds, an important habitat for many local bird species, animals, insects and amphibians. Hartlen Point is also a popular location for surfing, birding and walking. Home to over 300 species of birds, this headland is the number one bird watching area in Nova Scotia, the number 10 in Canada and the only such spot in the top 50 in Canada that is not protected. The property falls under the stewardship of DND (federal Department of National Defense). The Canadian Navy is building a Land Based Training Facility on this spot and will erect high-frequency radar towers, essentially destroying all wildlife habitat. The $6M- lobster fishery was not even mentioned in the DND environmental reports. Community members have expressed their concerns to government at all levels but they have been completely ignored.
